The International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme is an internationally recognized, rigorous two-year course of study designed to prepare students for higher education. The program is open to students aged 16 to 19 and is offered in more than 4,000 schools worldwide.
The IB Diploma Programme consists of six academic courses, three of which are chosen from six subject groups. The remaining three courses are the Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay, and the Creativity, Action, and Service component. Students must also complete the Core, which includes the Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay, and the Creativity, Action, and Service component. The six subject groups are Studies in Language and Literature, Language Acquisition, Individuals and Societies, Sciences, Mathematics, and the Arts. Each subject group includes multiple options for study, such as English, French, Spanish, History, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Math Studies, and Visual Arts. Students must take three courses from at least two of the subject groups.
In addition to the academic courses, students must complete the Core. The Theory of Knowledge course encourages students to develop critical thinking skills by exploring the nature of knowledge and the acquisition of knowledge. The Extended Essay is an independent research paper of 4,000 words that allows students to investigate a topic of their choice. The Creativity, Action, and Service component encourages students to engage in activities that promote creativity, physical and mental well-being, and social responsibility.
